For centuries, full lips symbolize glamour, youth and sexuality for women. Many thanks to the Kardashian / Jenner clan, lip augmentation has come to an all time high over the last few years. It is the most inquired aesthetic enhancement by patients in all age groups. This increase in demand comes with an increase in potential inexperienced aesthetic injectors which can lead to unpleasant results. I want all my patients to be educated about their lip enhancement journey and to be careful when choosing your injector! As an aesthetic PA, here are the 5 standard things I want you to know about lip augmentation.
1. LIP FILLERS ARE TEMPORARY.
The most popular and easiest way to plump your lips is with the use of temporary hyaluronic acid based fillers, such as those in the Juvederm and Restylane family. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the human body found in our skin, eyes and joints. Because we already have hyaluronic acid in our body, it’s easy for our body to break it down hence making the effects of lip fillers temporary. The longevity of these products vary from patient to patient, which is dependent on their lifestyle, age and other factors.
2. DO NOT PRICE SHOP!
By now, you have surely watched an episode of “Botched”, where patients come seeking professional help from Dr. Nassif and Dr. Dubrow after getting cosmetic surgery that didn’t turn out as planned. A good amount of these patients made the wrong decision to “go somewhere cheaper” ::CRINGE::, thus getting botched. Well, you get what you pay for! Acquiring lip fillers is not like buying a shirt or a necklace – it’s something that you are going to have for a while and it’s sitting right on your face. Rather than price shopping, definitely go injector shopping. Lip fillers can cost anywhere from $600 – $1400 per visit, depending on our treatment plan.
3. GET TO KNOW YOUR AESTHETIC INJECTOR.
I keep a very open and close relationship with my patients. The patient – injector relationship is vital when choosing your injector and we should be honored you trust us with your unique face. You should feel comfortable enough to ask us questions about our background, education, training and work style. Ask for before and after photos. Do they all look the same? Or are they customized for each patient? How available are we if you have any questions post treatment? Remember – if your injector looks a little crazy, chances are so will you. Choose wisely.
4. THERE IS PRE AND POST CARE.
Please avoid any ibuprofen, aspirin, Vitamin E and fish oil 5 days prior to injections as they thin your blood and cause more bruising and swelling than necessary. Let’s also throw any alcohol into that mix because alcohol does the same thing. For those who do not follow this prep (and not tell me), you swell super fast which can alter your results as I’m injecting at which point I will most likely have you come back another day. You can start taking Arnica pills and start eating some pineapple fruit 5 days before treatment – both of which can help reduce bruising and swelling during and after the procedure. I will instruct you on how to ice the area and to sleep with your head elevated to avoid more swelling. So hold off on that Veuve Clicquot til you are all healed!
5. AIM TO HAVE THE BEST VERSION OF YOUR LIPS.
It’s okay for you to bring me photos of your lip inspiration. Kylie Jenner, Hailey Baldwin and tons of instagram beauty blogger screenshots are the usual. However, I can almost guarantee that you will love looking like your own best version, as you should. No-one is you and that is your power so rather than imitate, accentuate!
Gone are the days when the only socially accepted option to enhance your lips were over-lining them and using a high shine lip plumper from Sephora. Don’t get me wrong – these are still good options but to have a substantial change, lip fillers are the way to go. To summarize, choose your aesthetic provider wisely and trust in their artistry. Til next week!
